Make sure you are aware off all the amazing things found in the place you live in.

Since the end of last year, our paper has been running daily stories about the essentials or must-dos around Rotorua.

Each day we are detailing one of the Essential 50, as nominated by our readers.

When you look at the list so far, it's fair to say we are lucky to live in a tourist town with so much to see and do.

But how many of the "essentials" have you done or seen?

Reading about these each day has spurred us at home into exploring our backyard and taking advantage of the local attractions more.

At the weekend we decided to go to one local attraction (which incidentally doesn't feature on our Essential 50 list) and sadly it didn't impress. I've been before and it was great but this time around it could have been so much better, simply if they had better customer service.

From failing to point out or clearly display there are special rates for locals, to having a menu that wasn't very user friendly (such as only serving fries for two people at a cost of $8.50) we were given the impression from the outset our money was more important than our satisfaction.

This was on top of staff (not just one of them) all looking pretty annoyed to be there and not wanting to engage in any pleasantries.

Thankfully there are hundreds of other businesses around Rotorua that excel with their service. For some great tips on what to see and do, check out our final list of the Essential 50 which we will publish on Saturday, February 1.
