Editorial: Easter treats costly

I can't believe the exorbitant prices of Easter eggs these days.

While Easter means a lot more to me than just Easter eggs - chocolate still plays a small part but I'm starting to wonder if an Easter egg boycott is in order next year.

Unfortunately, if I have the choice I prefer an Easter egg over a chocolate bar and I have a certain brand I like the best - just ask my husband.

He was quite shocked when I had a bit of a grizzle after he brought home some Easter eggs that weren't that brand. I sort of feel a bit guilty about that now.

We headed out early last week to do our annual Easter egg purchase for family members and we spent a lot more money than I expected to.

A hollow dark chocolate egg with a height of about 15cm-20cm and a circumference of around 10cm with a few dark chocolates thrown in for good measure was $15. I couldn't believe it but I chose to buy it because certain family members have more of a bent for dark chocolate. However, I could have purchased six king size bars of Energy chocolate for the price of one egg.

I used to buy Easter eggs for some friends and even workmates as well but it's just too pricey now.

This year I made do with a few small bags of tiny Caramello eggs to put out at home if we have any guests.

Given the price I was surprised when I headed back to the supermarket late last week to find that they were starting to run quite low on Easter eggs.

I wonder how expensive the eggs have to be before people will choose not to buy them.
