9.20pm update: Rotorua has been shaken by a series of at least 11 earthquakes tonight.

The first, at 6.57pm was recorded by Geonet to be a magnitude of 2.3 at a depth of 8km.

It was centred within 5km of Rotorua.

The second was at 7.11pm. It was 2.1 magnitude and 7km deep, also centred within 5km of Rotorua.

There was a third at 7.20pm, it was 2.1 and at a depth of 10km.

A fourth, recorded at 7.25pm, was classified as light intensity and recorded as a 2.8 magnitude and 9km deep.

The earthquakes have carried on into the evening. The largest was another 2.8 at 7.56pm.

Another six ranged in intensity from 1.8 to 2.4.

The latest was at 9.06pm.

All have been centred within 5km of Rotorua, with a couple centred 5km east of Rotorua.

Geonet tweeted tonight that swarms like this were common in the area. The link in the tweet is to an August 2013 article.
