Bay of Plenty police are wanting to identify the man driving a car stolen from Rotorua.

The man's image was caught on camera as he failed to stop at a police checkpoint in Te Puke last month.

"A short time later the vehicle was abandoned, so we have the car back but still need to identify the driver," police said.

The mans is described to have a slim build and dark braided hair.

Anyone with information that might assist are asked to call Sergeant Lee Stringer on 021 191 3597.
