Part of St John's Church in Rotorua is being knocked down, following last month's devastating fire.

Minister Lance Thomas said part of the charred building was being demolished today for safety reasons.

He said the main concern was to make the site safe.

The initial work should be completed today, Mr Thomas said.

The next steps for the building would be in the hands of its insurers, he said.
