Kate Cameron says girls should be supporting each other, not bringing each other down.

Former Bay of Plenty woman Kate Cameron says she became a target for cyber bullies after appearing as a contestant on the reality television show The Bachelor NZ earlier this year.

The 28-year-old, who grew up in Otamarakau, 15km out of Te Puke, said negative comments started appearing on her Instagram account once the show aired.

"I blocked those people from my account and made a comment that clearly stated I would not tolerate bullying behaviour on my page."

Ms Cameron believed the comments were made by people who had nothing better to do with their time. She felt she had a responsibility to be a role model to younger girls.

"I don't condone cyber bullying one bit. Young girls in particular should be supporting and uplifting each other, not bringing each other down.

"It's a message I am really big on advocating and backing. As my Mum always said to me "treat others as you would like to be treated", it's that simple."
