Central and Geyser cricket clubs are off to a winning start in the Rotorua/Taupo reserve grade competition.

After a long winter away from the sport, local cricketers blew away the cobwebs to open the reserve grade cricket season on Saturday.

Three games were played at the weekend under fine conditions.

Geyser Cricket Club have entered two teams into the competition this year. Their number one team played Eastern Pirates who bowled first but could not dismiss Geyser 1 in the 40 overs.

Geyser 1 ended their innings with 236/7 on the board, with Matt Mitchell top scoring with 54.

In reply, the Pirates were all out for 155.

Captain Des Beckett top scored for the club with 42. Geyser bowler Matt Collier did the damage with the ball returning figures of 4/54.

At the other game on Boord Park, Central got their season off to a winning start against Geyser 2.

Geyser 2 batted first and made 161/7 in their 40 overs.

Dave Hunt led the reply for Central coming in at number three and blasting 59 not out, chasing down the total with seven wickets to spare.

"It was a good start," Central captain Sam Gordon said.

"We have a few young fellas from the school grade and they did really well."

He said it was just good to be back playing the game.

"You are itching to play in the middle of winter and now that we're there, we are right into it," he said.

Gordon said their aim for this year was to win the pre-Christmas competition.

He said he was really impressed with the young players who represented the club on Saturday including Juan Nieuwoudt and FG Gous.

Meanwhile, the Taupo Wanderers unleashed a relentless bowling attack to deny the young Taupo Combined Colleges team a victory.

The combined college side, made up of Taupo-nui-a-Tia College and Tauhara College players, managed to dismiss the Wanderers for 180 in the first innings.

Top performer in the match was Taupo Colleges' Shannon McSkimming who picked up the only five-wicket bag of the weekend. However, the Wanderers' bowlers were ruthless and dismissed the Taupo Colleges team for 133.

Two other matches which were scheduled to play at the weekend were cancelled due to sides pulling out or not showing up.
