Fed up with illegal rubbish dumping, Rotorua district councillor Charles Sturt is reaching into his own pocket to help address the problem.

Mr Sturt has offered a $500 reward for information leading to the prosecution of the person who dumped waste on Mountain Rd.

Mr Sturt offered the reward on his Facebook page after rubbish, including a washing machine, whiteware and other household rubbish, was dumped on Mountain Rd.

Mr Sturt said neighbours were keeping a watch on a "semi roster system" at night, but the illegal dumping was also happening during the day.

He said Mountain Rd wasn't the only area being hit hard with people dumping rubbish.

"Dansey Rd is just unbelievable."
