Rotorua's Lakefront-based tourism operators have been asked to stop landing on Mokoia Island by the island's new concession holders.

The Wai Ora Mokoia Island Experience, set up and run by Hell's Gate and Wai Ora Spa, has been operating a Mokoia Island tourist venture from its new Lakefront
base since December 1 last year.

The 37-year licence for the new venture was purchased from Mokoia Island principal concessionaire John Marsh and includes the protection of the island's conservation, historical values and development.

Hell's Gate and Wai Ora Spa chief executive Bryan Hughes confirmed they had spoken to all island users explaining the company's position.

"As far as we are concerned we have the exclusive right to take tours to the island.

"The absolute last resort would be getting the police involved if other operators continue to land on the island without consent," Mr Hughes said.

Mana Adventures owner/operator Mike Solomon said he was fine with Wai Ora's stance, saying that they had been in contact with them about the issue.

"It's a matter of common courtesy, we look forward to working alongside them in the future," Mr Solomon said.

Kawarau Jet Rotorua manager Ross Kelly said they would prefer not to comment until some details had been discussed with the trustees.

Mr Hughes said they were concerned over-use of the island would damage its sensitive ecosystem.

"We are very concerned about Mokoia Island's status as a wildlife refuge.

"It is a very special place.

"If other operators don't follow Department of Conservation procedures then it may not remain predator free and endanger the kiwis and the other native birds that live there," he said.

Mokoia Island is privately owned and administered by the Mokoia Island Trust.

One of the island's trustees, Jim Gray, said that a previous concession holder had issued two memorandums of understanding to some local operators.

However, he said the trust had not known about the memorandums and they were not legally binding.

"There is no provision in the concession to assign landing rights to anyone without the consent of the island's trustees," Mr Gray said.

Trustees include Te Arawa kaumatua Mita Mohi, Pihopa Kingi, Jim Gray, Piri Fenwick, Selwyn Bennett and lawyer Donna Hall.
