Rotorua-based men's team member Shaq Stone said the weather was "pretty unfortunate", and he had never played in such continual rain.
"We had trying conditions for sure, both sides had to step a level up. It was pretty crazy to see how much the rain influenced the match. It could have gone either way. We did try to stick to the game plan but we were all running slower, the ball was slippery and a hundred times harder to control and rucks and balance were pretty tough in the wet."
The score was 4-all after 40 minutes, but the Australian men clinched the next point to take out the match and series.
Despite the loss, Shaq Stone thought the team put out their best performance and he was "immensely proud".
"We emptied the tank. It was a huge grind, a huge effort over the three days. It is a good learning curve for the 2019 World Cup."
He said playing at home in Rotorua gave him "a second wind".
"The crowd was magnificent, and having family and friends see me play was on extra pat on the back. It was definitely extra motivation."
The Australian women had taken out the series by Saturday afternoon.
They won their Friday game 9-5 and the Saturday clash 8-5.
When the Saturday afternoon rain worsened to torrential levels this morning, the final women's match was cancelled.
In the mixed team clashes, the Kiwis lost the opener 8-7, but won the Saturday match 9-6.
Today the Australians struck back with a convincing win 7-4 victory.
