A Rotorua carpentry apprentice is hoping to prove he is the best in the Bay.

Conor France-Benfell, 20, who is three years into his apprenticeship at New Zealand Log Homes, was approached by his mentors to enter the Registered Master Builders Carters 2015 Bay of Plenty Region Apprentice of the Year.

Eight carpentry apprentices from around the Bay of Plenty are participating in the competition which involves an entry submission, a formal interview and a site visit to assess competency, skill and safety consciousness.

RMBA chief executive David Kelly said entries were particularly strong in the Central North Island.

"The competition opens doors for many of the entrants. It is an opportunity for them to prove themselves alongside their peers, and the building and construction community."

The winner receives $2000 to spend at Carters, a spot at an Outward Bound course and a range of products and tools.

They will also go on to participate in the national competition in October.

Mr France-Benfell said if he won he would spend the money on work equipment to get himself started.
