Cars crashing through fence: 'We've just about had enough'

For Kim Curtis, cars crashing through her fence has become an all too-familiar scene.

The latest incident happened today when a car rolled and crashed through the fence of her State Highway 30 property in Tikitere.

A police media spokeswoman said police were called to the crash near the intersection with State Highway 33 and Brunswick Drive about 12.52pm.

The car had rolled on to its roof. Initially a person was trapped but they were treated for minor injuries by ambulance staff.

For frustrated property owner Curtis it was nothing new.

"We have lived here for 26 years and it's a frequent occurrence really," she said.

Curtis said once every couple of years a car destroyed the fence, costing them thousands of dollars.

"I went back through our insurance claims, the first I can see is 2003, then again in 2006.

"About four or five years ago a person died, others have been badly hurt."

She said the cost went beyond the insurance claims and fence repair.

"We had to leave work early, had to help clear our property, put up a temporary fence, it takes a lot of time and effort."

Curtis has had enough and said she will be approaching the New Zealand Transport Agency about installing a guard rail along the road.

"We know the drill by now, we hear the noise and we are out the door phone in hand and high vis vest ready.

"Police, ambulance, fire, they all rush out and everybody else gets looked after, but we're just left to clean up.

"We've just about had enough."

She said it was a bad spot.

"We need somebody to come and take a look at it before the next accident."
