A man who got his brake and accelerator mixed up accidentally drove his car into the side of the Westend shopping centre.

A police media spokeswoman said the incident happened about 3.30pm.

The car crashed into an empty building that's part of the shopping centre.

A police officer at the scene said an elderly man was pulling into a car park when he accidentally put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake, sending his car flying into the ATM.

Local Brian Mollgaard said he had been standing nearby when he saw the car shoot forward.

"It was an old guy, he's in shock. He came in quite slow but I think he must have hit the accelerator instead of the brake."

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said the driver didn't have any injuries.
