Emergency services are on the scene north of Rotorua after a car crashed into a rail and caught on fire.

The crash happened on State Highway 5, about 500m south of Western Rd, just before 5pm yesterday.

A police media spokeswoman said the driver of the car managed to get out unharmed before the car caught alight.

She said fire and ambulance services were at the scene with police and the vehicle would be towed.
