Karin Horen knows all about the importance of cancer rehab in helping you get back to family life after treatments.
After going through breast cancer twice, Ms Horen used stand-up paddling to help her recover the strength and energy she needed to look after their three young children while herpartner, Rotorua-born actor Manu Bennett, was away on overseas acting contracts.
"Manu introduced me to the sport and made it look so easy and fun I had to try it. I will forever be thankful. Stand-up paddling has changed my life and the life of other cancer sufferers.
"I love the way paddling makes me feel, and I want to share that with even more people - especially those who have been through challenges," she said.
This Sunday Ms Horen is teaming up with Te Ngae physiotherapist Mel Loveless to host a free have-a-go day at Tikitapu (Blue Lake).
The have-a-go day is to help raise awareness about a new cancer rehabilitation programme being launched in Rotorua from January 12 to February 13. Called PaddleOn, the eight-session stand-up paddle programme is free for anyone who has been affected by cancer.
The programme has been specifically designed to introduce the components of stand-up paddling including balance, strength and confidence.
The small group sessions ensure participants are closely observed during their rehab session, while also creating a close sense of community.
Participants need to have completed primary cancer treatment.
-Families are welcome at Tikitapu for the free introduction to stand-up paddling on Sunday from 9am to 1pm. For more details see https://www.facebook.com/events/745689852203761/.
