The mother of the 19-year-old seriously hurt in the crash with James Rolleston says news the Boy actor is out of hospital is "great".

Erica Maxwell, the mother of Rolleston's childhood friend Kaleb Maxwell, said the young men were reunited on Friday when her son drove to Waikato Hospital to visit Rolleston who was being treated there.

"He absolutely loved being with his mate, they were both buzzing to see each other."

She told the Herald "James was sitting up in bed".

"He was talking away - a bit sore but back to his old self. It's such a godsend, a blessing."

Maxwell said she was told by Rolleston's family he would be heading to an Auckland rehabilitation centre to further recuperate.

The Waikato District Health Board announced this afternoon that Rolleston has been transferred from Waikato Hospital to a rehabilitation facility.

Rolleston was injured in a horror car accident on the night of July 26 when the car he was travelling in with Kaleb Maxwell crashed into a bridge in east Opotiki, where he is from.

Rolleston and Maxwell were taken to Tauranga Hospital before Rolleston was transferred to Waikato Hospital's ICU.

"Half the bridge" ended up in the car, said a volunteer firefighter, who described the crash site as a "total mess".

The car was written off and police were forced to shut down the road for an hour to clear the wreckage.

Rolleston became a household name after starring in Taika Waititi's cult hit Boy, as well as roles in The Dead Lands with Te Kohe Tuhaka and The Dark Horse alongside Cliff Curtis.
