A young boy has been airlifted to Rotorua Hospital after falling down a 9-metre cliff in the Te Urewera National Park.

The BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called to Ruatahuna yesterday evening to help the 11-year-old, who fell while out walking with family.

Family members carried the injured boy to the nearest house to raise the alarm, as there was no cellphone reception where they were tramping, in the Te Urewera National Park.

The boy was stabilised by the onboard paramedic before being flown to Rotorua Hospital in a moderate condition.
