Rotorua residents are being warned about a scam which has been circulating since January.

Detective Sergeant John Wilson of the Rotorua police said the scam had been reported to police across New Zealand and was still very active in Rotorua.

"In the scam, householders are contacted via telephone by a company claiming to be a Windows service provider," Mr Wilson said.

"They are told that their computer has a virus and the caller will then attempt to talk the householder through a series of steps which will give the fraudsters remote access and control of your PC."

Mr Wilson said if the fraudsters were challenged, they claim a scam is going around which was a similar operation but they try to convince people they are genuine.

"They will request credit card details for payment," he said.

"Under no circumstances give these sorts of details, nor should you let anyone have remote access to your computer, as this could enable them to potentially access your bank details, emails, and personal details."

Mr Wilson said it was believed the scam is based overseas. "The best course of action if you receive a call of this nature is to hang up."
