Beach dig offers prizes for young locals

It's a good reason to get up early - a chance to win prizes at The Hits Beach Dig.

Taking place this Sunday at Hannahs Bay Reserve the annual free event, which has teamed up with McDonald's Rotorua, is open to kids 12 and under.

The Hits presenter Paul Hickey is MC for the day and said the competition started at 9.30am sharp - so get there on time.

"If you turn up at 10am everything will be gone."

Mr Hickey said there was no need to bring spades and buckets, with competitors using their hands to dig.

"We'll have hundreds of numbered sticks buried in the sand and every number corresponds to a prize - every little digger is guaranteed a prize."

There is also a chance to win spot prizes from Rainbow Springs, Reading Cinemas, Rotorua Speedway and Wonderworld Aquarium and Pet Centre.

The prizegiving will be held about 10.15am.

Mr Hickey said the beach dig had been running for six years, and at the event younger children would have a go before the older kids got their chance.

"It's a nice event for the kids."

Mr Hickey said there was also a big playground for the kids to enjoy before the dig began.
