Breastfeeding Rotorua mums are being encouraged to head along and try to break a world record next Friday. The Big Latch On will be taking place to coincide with World Breastfeeding Week, which runs from August 1 to 7.
Next Friday at 10.30am women and their babies will gather aroundthe country to try and break the record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously.
Mums who want to take part in the Big Latch On can head along to the Rotorua Plunket Rooms in Pukuatua St, the Rotorua Parents Centre in Kamahi Place, Tipu Ora in Houkotutu St or the Atiamuri Playcentre.
Lakes Plunket acting area manager Lynn Carter said that deciding to breastfeed your baby was one of the most positive steps you can take towards ensuring they got the best start in life.
"Breast milk is the perfect food for infants and provides babies with all the nutrition they need for healthy growth and development. It's the original fast food - it's always fresh and delivered at the right temperature plus it's free and readily available."
She said breastfeeding was a skill that requires learning for both mother and baby and there's lots of support available. PlunketLine (0800 933 922) is available 24 hours, 7 days a week or mothers can talk to their local Plunket nurse or join a play group or parenting support group where other mums will offer support and information in a friendly and relaxed environment, she said.
