Rotorua professional golfer Danny Lee might just be in the most unique position of any New Zealand athlete.
The former schoolboy phenomenon and US Amateur champion picked up $445,030 for his third-placed finish at the OHL Classic on the PGA Tour in Mayakoba, Mexico, but it didn't really matter.
The contracts he signed upon turning professional - including a deal with IMG worth more than $17,000,000 - meant he will never live the life of a struggling young professional relying on cash from tournaments to pay his way.
He is not so much a golfer any more but a commodity.
His quest is for Fed Ex Cup points and to become the eighth New Zealand player to win on the PGA Tour. For his backers, such success would equate to an expected return on their various investments.
