Two local women have earned $1000 Adult Learner Awards for their efforts in studying at Wintec.
Bronwyn Fleet, Rotorua, and Donna-Lee Biddle, Murupara, were among six adult students who won awards. This was part of the educational institute's way of acknowledging Adult Learners' Week - He Tangata Matauranga.

The awardswere open to all students aged 25 and above studying at Wintec. Recipients had to demonstrate they learned with an infectious enthusiasm, demonstrated a commitment to their programme of study, supported and encouraged other learners to engage in learning activities, were willing to share new skills, knowledge and abilities with others and challenge themselves and others with new ideas.
Wintec chief executive Mark Flowers said the award winners were students who had made an impact while studying and stood out to their tutors for all the right reasons. "Many have overcome significant obstacles to study and these awards are our way of formally recognising their efforts and achievements," he said.
Ms Fleet is studying a Bachelor of Midwifery at Wintec's Centre of Health and Social Practice. She was described as "a calm influence on the class, listening intently and contributing with a well-thought out answer when needed.
"She has a wealth of knowledge around many aspects of maternal and child health and shares this with enthusiasm, without ever seeming overbearing. She is always punctual and responsive. Bronwyn can be relied on to give constructive feedback when needed."
Ms Biddle is a mother-of-three studying a Bachelor of Media Arts (Communication) at Wintec's School of Media Arts. In her citation it was said that "many students look to her as a role model of what is possible if you are able to prioritise your work load and other commitments.
"She actively supports students who are struggling either with their learning, by offering support and encouragement, or with issues in their life, by providing a stable role model."
The awards were presented at a ceremony held at The Atrium, in Wintec House, which was attended by nominees, their families, and Wintec staff and tutors.
