Te Waiariki's Maylene Meroiti, who is the Ira Matatau Active Citizenship co-ordinator, said young people experienced barriers to participating sport. After putting out a number of ideas to the community this event was one that received a lot of support.
"We want to try to promote participation and accessibility for young people to play sports," Ms Meroiti said.
"We've noticed a drop in club memberships. At a younger age they let you get away with playing in shoes but once you reach a certain age you need the proper gear and you pay fees. Sport is a good outlet, it's something for young people to belong to."
Anyone who has any sports gear they no longer use can take it along to the event for others to take home and use.
As well as the swap there will also be the chance to try out a number of sporting activities.
There will be a fun boxing ring, kayaking in the pool, rippa rugby, Feast Tae Kwon Do, volleyball, netball and many more.
