RedSpot owner Glenn McLeary has turned his passion for art into a flourishing business. In 2008 he and wife Tammie started RedSpot Design and a year later they opened the RedSpot Gallery on Haupapa St - showcasing contemporary art in a stunning central city space.

In a nutshell, what does your business do?

RedSpot Ltd is basically several businesses under one brand. RedSpot Gallery is an art space that specialises in modern New Zealand contemporary art (wall and object). RedSpot Design is the main part of the business and focuses on graphic and web design, branding, multimedia, signage etc.

We renovated our iconic building to have the gallery as front of house with the design business in the rear of the building.

What inspired you to set up your current business?

When we arrived back from Australia in 2007, we wanted to replicate a similar business model we had successfully run for 10 years in Brisbane in the graphics and printing industry.

This time we wanted to focus on the graphics side without the overheads of the printing and incorporate a love of art into a new set up. With the closure of several galleries in town around 2008/2009 there was a hole in the market for a commercial art gallery but we knew it would would be a tough ask without another string to its bow - hence the incorporation of the graphic design business.

What was the best business decision you have made?

One of the best business decisions has always been to buy our own premises. This has created stability for the business, while also creating a long term investment.

What was your worst business mistake (if any) and what did you learn from it?

Employing people not suitable to positions. Employment agencies can do much of the background work to ensure the right person is suitable to the position advertised.

What do you see as the biggest opportunity for your business in the year ahead?

The graphics side of the business continues to grow strongly and as a result more people are being introduced to the art gallery as they visit for business.

If you could do any other job for a day, what would that be?

Fishing guide on one of our beautiful lakes.

How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?

It can be a balancing act, but I've always made time for family and my children often spend time at the gallery with me on Saturday.

What's the best thing about being in business in Rotorua?

The Rotorua District Council do an amazing job keeping this city looking beautiful and it's a pleasure coming to work each day.

If you were mayor of Rotorua for one day, what one change would you make?

Possibly review the rates for CBD businesses to encourage more investment and occupancy.
