This Valentine's weekend is offering the love-struck a second chance to enjoy the occasion, with a pet. That chance will be offered by the SPCA, where 1000 homeless animals around the country are waiting to be "hooked" by caring hearts in society. A national adopt-a-thon, a Second Chance for Love campaign, tomorrowand Sunday is an opportunity for people to visit their local SPCA, spend some time with the animals and possibly adopt a pet. In Whangarei, 150 animals are waiting for new homes and manager Francine Shields said she hoped the adopt-a-thon would become an annual event. "For us, the event will resemble a big friendly atmosphere ... there'll be sausage sizzle, spot prizes, raffles and the like," she said. Robyn Kippenberger, the SPCA's national chief executive, said 20 SPCA centres around New Zealand would participate and people could win great prizes. She said SPCA volunteers would share information on how to care for new pets, and visitors could win prizes of Hills food. Hills Pet Nutrition commercial manager, New Zealand, Greg Boyce-Bacon, said there will also be a chance to win a year's supply of Hills Science Diet pet food.
