A 1912 Ford Model T Speedster stole the show at Saturday's Far North Vintage Car Club Autospectacular at Taipa, but it had some stiff competition.

The display once again attracted an impressive array of wheels, including a collection of immaculately presented heavy vehicles from around the North, but none surpassed David Lane's Speedster. The Auckland man had won the People's Choice award twice before, with a 1930 Studebaker.

Attention was diverted away from the cars, trucks, bikes and vans twice during the day, however, while weaponry aficionado John Osborne supervised the firing of three 1650-model replica mortars.

Far North Mayor John Carter and Autospectacular frontman Rosco Pennell successfully propelled smoke and damp sawdust into the air, but retired pharmacist Eric Shackleton could not persuade his mortar to co-operate.

Meanwhile the Speedster was judged the best of the cars, ahead of Pae Clark's 1966 Chev. Rosco Pennell won the commercial section with a 1965 single-cab VW Transporter, from Peter Matthews' 1951 2-ton Bedford, and Malcolm Hart won the motorcycle honours with a 2003 Vespa PX200, from Luke McDonald's 1939 AJS 350.

The Bay of Islands Classic and Sports Car Club won the best car club display prize.
There were many other attractions, including Caro Jones' Crazy Critters mobile farm, from Umawera/Rangiahua, whose collection included chooks, ducks, a pig, lambs, a goat, guinea pigs, rabbits, calves and miniature horses, one of which, 12-year-old Honey, obligingly provided the horsepower for buggy rides.
