A whole new wave of water play is bound to make a splash at an outdoor and leisure expo in Whangarei.
With the help of winches and rails, New Zealand's top professional wakeboarders and wakeskaters will be surfing in two 12-metre-long pools installed at the expo site by Whangarei store MegaSurf.
Yesterday afternoon the company's hardware specialist, Steve Thompson, described setting up the pools and demo site near the Kensington ASB Stadium's carpark as "a logistical nightmare", but one he predicted would be smooth sailing by today.
Not that smooth sailing is what the pro teams from the Jstar and Jet Pilots wake and skate board companies will be looking for - the faster they can skim across those pools, hit a 10-metre-long rail and launch into the air, the better.
"It's the first time anything like this has happened in Whangarei. We're really excited about it," Mr Thompson said.
The boarders would probably be doing sessions a couple of times a day.
The Northern Advocate Outdoor Adventure and Leisure Expo is on Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 4pm.
