Police have released pictures of a car similar to that used to repeatedly ram a patrol car.
Two Whangarei police officers were left shaken but uninjured after the driver of a stolen Subaru Impreza rammed their car six times before immobilising it and fleeing about 6am on Thursday.
The driver, described as
a male caucasian with a goatee and a number-one haircut, remains on the run.
Detective Sergeant Shane Pilmer released pictures of a car about the same colour and style as that used in what he called a "prolonged attack" .
He said the light blue Subaru Impreza hatchback, registration FGZ617, would have extensive damage to the rear.
About 5.45am on Thursday the Subaru hit an oncoming Toyota Camry when passing a large truck on State Highway 1 on the Brynderwyn Hill, south of Whangarei.
An officer spotted the car just south of Whangarei and the Subaru driver pulled into the Gull Service Station at Otaika.
But as it slowed the driver reversed back into the patrol vehicle twice.
After a chase, the Subaru rammed the patrol car at least four more times.
Anyone who may have seen the Subaru or knows where it may have been dumped should call Whangarei police on 09 430 4500.
