Two Auckland men arrested in Dargaville for unlawfully being in a motor vehicle admitted to police they had drunk three bottles of methylated spirits.
The pair were randomly stopped in Parore St at around 1am yesterday. Investigations showed the Subaru car they were driving was stolen.
A breath test on the 40-year-old driver returned a reading of 1046 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath - two and a half times the legal limit.
Both men admitted they knew the vehicle was stolen, but refused to name those responsible.
Police said they suspected the car was stolen by gang members and that the men refused to identify the offenders saying "we want to keep living".
