Northland Regional Council staff must wait to learn job fate

Northland Regional Council staff waiting to hear whether they keep their jobs or not will now wait at least another two weeks.

The NRC is undergoing a controversial restructure which could see 11 jobs disestablished and 18 more created. The restructure proposal given to staff in March had stated that affected employees would know their fate yesterday. However, CEO Malcolm Nicolson announced yesterday that the proposal's consultation period was two weeks behind schedule.

The delay was partially due to staff requesting more time or meetings to discuss the proposal.

There had also been delays as an independent consultant working on the proposal had been unavailable.

Mr Nicolson could not confirm a revised timetable yesterday but told staff more detail would follow in two weeks. Mr Nicolson announced the restructure in March, to criticism that justification for the possible lay-offs signalled "change management" and not redundancies. Mr Nicolson has told the Northern Advocate he is confident of the restructure's legal integrity.
