Meth case

One of six Auckland men charged in connection with the largest seizure of methamphetamine in the country on Ninety Mile Beach and at Totara North will re-appear in court on June 23.

Ulakai Fakaosilea, 28, is facing one charge of importing methamphetamine and another of possession for supply. He was arrested in connection with the seizure of 448kg of meth from the back of a campervan last year and a further 46kg from bags buried in sand dunes on Ninety Mile Beach.

The drugs are worth $494 million and outstripped the 334kg of meth seized in New Zealand last year.

A charity dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related side-effects caused by cancer treatment is hitting the road again and will be in Whangarei this week. Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) provides free practical classes which cover skincare, make-up and headwear demonstrations.

The charity is bringing its On the Move shipping container to town on Friday and Saturday to promote its education hub and the launch of its men's programme.

As part of this year's trip a special film studio has been set up inside the container where past and present LGFB participants, and anyone affected by cancer, will be able to tell their stories. The container will be located at the St John Ambulance station.

Assault charges

A 25-year-old Far North woman was charged with trespass and two counts of assault with a weapon after a violent domestic incident on Wednesday night.

According to police she twice struck the male complainant with his own utility vehicle, punched him in the face and shoulder, and tried to hit him on the head with a beer bottle.

Myrtle rust spreads

The plant disease myrtle rust is continuing to spread with a case confirmed Tuesday in a plant nursery in Te Kuiti, Waikato. The infected plants were found by tracing sales from another nursery where the fungus had been found. The nursery has been locked down and is being sprayed with fungicide.

The latest find brings the number of cases to 16, two of which - the Kerikeri plant nursery where it was first found and a neighbouring garden - are in Northland. The remaining 13 cases are in Taranaki and include an orchard for the first time. So far 420 people have called the MPI hotline 0800 809 966 to report suspected sightings.

Vehicles recovered

A Holden ute, stolen from Whangarei last week, has been recovered by police in Wireless Rd outside Kaitaia. A 32-year-old man had admitted getting into the vehicle with his brother, a spokesman said, and using a stolen card to pay for petrol.

Meanwhile a 32-year-old woman has been charged with unlawfully taking a Holden stationwagon from Mangawhai which was recovered from a ditch in Moa St, Ahipara. She has also been charged with theft of petrol.
