Kiwis have been told to remain alert for 'strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore'.
  • A tsunami advisory remains in place for New Zealand after a massive earthquake Wednesday morning, with Kiwis being urged to “treat the threat as real”.
  • The magnitude 8.8 quake struck off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia at 11.25am (NZT).
  • It is the only quake over magnitude 8 this year, and the first of this size since 2021.
  • A new emergency alert was issued to New Zealanders this morning at 6.31am, warning Kiwis to stay away from sea and shore.
  • Nema said tsunami activity had already reached NZ.
  • It said the first currents and surges are unlikely to be the largest and are expected to continue over many hours.
  • Due to rebounding tsunami activity from South America, the east coast of NZ and the Chatham Islands remain under a National Advisory, and are likely to remain so overnight.
  • Strong and unusual currents on the eastern side of New Zealand may be present until 3.30pm Sat.
