Police are investigating after a dirtbike rider was found dead and a second was left seriously injured after incidents on two rural Far North roads.

Police are investigating after a dirtbike rider was found dead and a second was left seriously injured after incidents on two rural Far North roads.

A dirt biker who was seriously injured after being knocked off his bike in the Far North is still in hospital.

Police were called to Ngapipito Rd, between Kaikohe and Moerewa about 11.10pm on May 5.

A rider was found dead on Ngapipito Rd and the injured rider located on intersecting Tana Rd.

A police investigation was launched. Officers suspect the riders had been knocked off their bikes.

A scene examination took place on Ngapipito Rd and a nearby property on May 5 and 6.

Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board member Roddy Pihema said on May 5 the community would be hurting.

“Someone has lost their life.”

He urged people to support the police during their investigation.

“I think the best thing to do is hold our tongues ... let the truth come out.

“Not just for the family, but the community as a whole.”

Anyone with information should contact police online or through 105, quoting reference number 260506/1270.
