Self-confessed "camera lover" Samyah Powell is in the running to become one of New Zealand's most well-known young characters, the Milky Bar Kid.
Samyah has made it in to the top 10 of the nationwide search for someone to fill the boots of the Kiwi chocolate star.
On a whim Samyah and her mother, Lisa, attended a video-taped audition in Whangarei earlier this year where contenders were given a script to act out.
"It was pretty nerve-wracking because there were lots of people," Samyah said.
After the audition Lisa threw the script away thinking that because more than 1500 children had entered there was only slim chance of Samyah making the cut.
But three days later the call came that she had made it to the top 59. She was asked to travel to Auckland for another audition and two weeks ago learned she had made it into the top 10.
"I was really surprised because of how many kids had entered and it was really exciting at the same time," Samyah said.
The only downside was having to keep the good news a secret until the official announcement was made - no easy task for the bubbly 9-year-old.
The names of the finalists have been revealed over 10 days. Samyah, who was named today as the northern-most finalist was the last to be announced.
The Whangarei Primary School pupil loves reading and maths and is top of the class. Her flair for performance has been polished through hip-hop dancing and cheerleading in which she has competed internationally. Whether or not she becomes the newest Milky Bar Kid, this little star has already performed in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Melbourne, Sydney.
"She's always performing; always has something on the go - even when she was one-and-half she would alway be doing stuff and we would say, 'She should be an actress', and what do you know?" her mother said.
Dance and cheerleading have given Samyah confidence in front of the camera.
"I'm a camera lover," she confessed.
She is calling on Northlanders to support her bid to become the next Milky Bar Kid - with an on-line vote helping decide the winner.
From November 1 to November 12 the public can vote on the website and a panel of judges will pick the ultimate winner, who will be announced on November 19. The chosen child will star in the new 2011 Milky Bar television commercial.
"As the only finalist north of Auckland, Samyah is really representing Northland so it's quite a big accomplishment given the number of children that entered," her mother said.
Said Samyah, "It would be cool to be the Milky Bar Kid."
