Serious gunshot injuries suffered by a Hokianga man are thought to have been accidentally self-inflicted, although police enquiries are continuing.
According to police 50-year-old Kohukohu man Kevin Richmond went shooting about 3pm on Wednesday. When he had not returned by 7.30pm his partner went looking for him, and he was
eventually found by his son and a friend on a farm track with a shotgun wound to his abdomen.
They managed to get him into a four-wheel-drive and took him to the ferry terminal where he was transferred to an ambulance, then flown by rescue helicopter from the Kohukohu rugby field to Whangarei for surgery. Mr Richmond reportedly said his 12-gauge shotgun discharged when he threw it on to a bank.
