Geoff Abbott - Denby candidate

I was asked why I wished to be a Whangarei District councillor, after being elected to local government in my early thirties and having had a lengthy period of involvement.

My community is important to me! I work and live in Denby and so do many friends, family and clients.

As such I understand the strengths, concerns, and many of the challenges in our community.

There are less than two years to run in this term of council, and to be an effective councillor you need to have a grasp of the ins and outs of local government and be familiar with the Local Government Act.

I have the experience in local body governance as a community board member and as a city councillor.

I will be your constructive, productive Denby representative on the WDC who listens to community input.

I have also had a commitment to serving the community; on KHS and WBHS Boards of Trustees, as a JP, and in the past coaching club sports and school debating teams.

I am a member of Kensington Fitness and both the Kamo and Whangarei Clubs.

As an accountant, business owner and a small business mentor I understand how council impacts on the success of business.

Thriving businesses produce increasing employment opportunities.

I am standing in this Denby byelection because I have the skills, knowledge and experience to ensure the WDC focus is on maintenance of existing infrastructure and developing it further, to meet the demands of our growing community (See October 26, Advocate article re 4000 new residents in Whangarei).

I want Denby to have effective local representation and for the wider Whangarei District to maintain and enhance our natural environment, so our current and future generations may enjoy it.
