Eleven teams of 10 Kaipara kids tackled six challenges in the second annual community "top team" challenge day, DARE Day Out, organised by Kauri Coast DARE.

Those attending said they had a blast and had enjoyed the competitive, but friendly atmosphere at Selwyn Park Dargaville on Saturday.

Participants were encouraged to display leadership, encouragement, strategy, team workmanship, instruction following, good decision-making and initiative.

Tasks included climbing a rock wall, pushing a police car and securing an accident scene, a ski-board walk, riding an earth ball, learning to hip-hop and experiencing the confusion of trying to perform tasks while being "boozed".

For the last task, the boozed effect was created by wearing special goggles.

Failing to follow instructions correctly or not working as a team incurred a penalty of 10 to 20 press-ups.

DARE - Decision-making, Assertiveness, Responsibility, Esteem (formerly known as Drug Abuse Resistance Education) offers skills for life programmes to youth in conjunction with the New Zealand Police.

The programmes are aimed at providing the skills required to make good choices and decisions.
