One of the world's most enduring sex symbols could soon be moving in next door.
American pop star Cher has found a Northland property she is keen to buy.
"We have isolated one she is interested in but we haven't got there yet," Bayley's Real Estate agent Hamish Macdonald said.
He refused to
disclose its location but the Advocate understands it is in the Bay of Islands area.
A former All Black who played 12 test matches for his country between 1972 and 1976, Mr Macdonald showed Cher around several Northland properties during a helicopter tour in February.
He has kept in contact with the world superstar since then but says the wheels are turning slowly.
"We are still working with her and it's probably going to be a fairly drawn-out affair," he said yesterday.
He was bound by a confidentiality agreement to not discuss the matter further, he said.
He told the Advocate three months ago that Cher was interested in a "few investment opportunities'' ... "nothing too grandiose, nothing too big".
They spent one day looking at a few opportunities in the Bay of Islands area.
It was Cher's first trip to New Zealand and her interest was focused on Northland because of the region's warm climate, said Mr Macdonald who has also acted as an agent for rock star Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Mr Macdonald, who has been with Bayleys 14 years, said New Zealand was an "attractive place", so it was not surprising celebrities and other international investors were interested in buying property here.
He said he did not get nervous dealing with celebrities.
"They're just pretty normal, like you and me." even Cher was in that category, he said.
Cher, who turns 59 later this month, is regarded as one of the world's more enduring entertainers with success in music, movies, television and on stage spanning nearly four decades.
Her daring stage outfits have earned her the nickname of the world's sexiest grandmother.
Born in 1946 in California, her first hit was with music producer Sonny Bono in 1965.
By the time they sang their hit, I Got You, Babe, the pair were lovers, and the song became a theme song for hippie lovebirds everywhere.
Meanwhile, another group of Americans has been granted consent by the Overseas Investment Commission to buy 41ha of land at Butterfly Bay in Whangaroa, Northland, for a confidential amount.
