WHAT are like meerkats, standing up proud and tall every time someone walks past?
Nudists on Uretiti Beach, Bream Bay, according to Auckland woman Sara Nevison.
Ms Nevison is staying with her partner in Waipu for the Christmas break, and said her walk along Uretiti Beach yesterday was blighted by the sight of a naked man standing in the middle of the beach and drinking beer.
"We went for a walk, my partner and her parents and I, and down at the beach there was a guy totally stark naked, drinking a beer, just standing up for everybody to see."
Ms Nevison found the sight "intimidating" and his display disturbing, with children building sandcastles just metres away.
"I just don't think it's appropriate. There were families on the beach."
She said if the man was sunning himself discreetly by the sand dunes she would not have such a problem. It was the show the man was trying to put on that bothered her.
"I'm not a prude, but when it's right there in front of you ... It seems to be the way every time we come up here."
• What are the rules?
Nudity is not allowed in the Department of Conservation campsite, which this year is administered by Bay of Plenty couple Murray and Karon Beckett.
Mr Beckett says nothing official declares Uretiti is a nudist beach, but for years people have just accepted naturists can strip off there. He believes the supposed designated nudist area is just south of the camping ground, down towards Tip Rd.
Yesterday Mr Beckett had to ask a naked man in front of the campground to move on. He warned the man he would call the police if he didn't, adding that beachgoers affronted by nudists were entitled to call the authorities. The police, he said, could book nudists for inappropriate exposure.
