Hopefully it's third time lucky for safety improvements on a notoriously dangerous pedestrian crossing in Whangarei.
The crossing on State Highway 1 at Otaika has been the subject of a series of community campaigns spanning 10 years. Work is now under way to fix a "safety" fence which hid pedestrians waiting to cross from ongoing traffic and vice-versa.
One campaigner, retired traffic engineer Dave Murray, was optimistic the installation of kerbside traffic islands would reduce the risk posed by the fence, initially installed to improve safety.
"But, as a traffic engineer I hate the use of 'solve the problem' because you're dealing with people, kids, and human nature," he said.
The work will mostly be done at night and was expected to wrap up by March 27.
