A Whangarei man who repeatedly beat up his partner after accusing her of having an affair with a relative has been jailed for two years.
The man, who cannot be legally named, pleaded guilty in the Whangarei District Court to an amended indictment before the start of his trial.
He was initially facing four charges of rape, two of unlawful sexual connection and single charges of injuring with intent to injure, assault with intent to injure, breach of a protection order and threatening to kill.
The Crown offered no evidence on all charges except on assault with intent to injure to which he pleaded guilty. He waived his right to a pre-sentence report and asked to be sentenced straight away.
In a victim impact statement read orally in court, his former partner said he always controlled her and that she felt "useless and incapable".
