Thirteen pelicans have been spotted on the Northern Wairoa River - and experts think they maybe here to stay.
The pelicans arrived a week ago on a gust of wind that has brought them right over the ditch!
And although it appears they have been enjoying life in Dargaville birders say whether they stay is dependent on the amount of food available to them and if they can find a peaceful sandy bank suitable for nesting.
The Northern Wairoa river is filled with mullet which is thought to be a favourite food of the pelicans.
Although small flocks of pelicans have been spotted in the past on our shores, this is the first time such a large group has made its home in NZ.
