Ex-partner charged
A man who allegedly assaulted his ex-partner at her home has been charged with injuring with intent to injure. Whangarei police Acting Sergeant Craig Burrows said officers were called to the Raumanga home about 5.30pm on Wednesday after a man went to the house and allegedly kicked his ex-partner several times and pulled her hair. The man was arrested and charged with injuring with intent to injure and more charges could be laid.
PSO issued after dispute
Whangarei police had to issue a "cooling down" order to a man who got into a verbal dispute with a woman. Acting Sergeant Craig Burrows, of Whangarei police, said officers were called to an Onerahi address at 4.40am yesterday after reports of a domestic dispute. Mr Burrows said police issued a 22-year-old man with a Police Safety Order (PSO) which ordered him to stay away from the house. PSOs - also known as cooling down orders, are effective in calming domestic situations and preventing violence. The safety orders give police power to order someone they suspect may be abusive to stay away from someone who may be in danger for up to five days.
GE-free tour in town
The Green Party is bringing its Making the Most of GE Free New Zealand Tour to Whangarei tomorrow. Green MP Steffan Browning and Australian farmer Bob Mackley will speak at the event, being held at the Old Library from 4pm to 6pm.
