Two girls, aged 16 and 17, handed themselves in to Whangarei police after having hitchhiked from Rotorua, where they had allegedly assaulted another girl over an unpaid debt.
Sergeant Grant Rouse, of Whangarei police, said the girls contacted police just after midnight on Thursday. They had been to a property in Rotorua on Wednesday to collect an unpaid debt. He said the female at the home had refused to pay and the two girls had then allegedly assaulted her, before hitchhiking north again.
Mr Rouse said the girls then didn't know what to do so handed themselves in to police.
One of the girls was remanded into the custody of Child Youth and Family while the other was bailed and returned to Rotorua.
