Kaipara District councillors are to receive a 6.6 per cent increase in salary, taking their remuneration from from $25,731 to $27,434.
The Remuneration Authority has set the salary pool for the period July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012 at $228,339, up 8.1 per cent from the previous $211,122.
This pool does not include the mayoral position, that salary is set by the authority. Mayor Neil Tiller receives $72,602, but this will increase by 7.7 per cent to $77,400 in July.
The council can recommend to the authority how the pool is divided. In the past, the Kaipara council has chosen a straight salary split rather than a salary and meeting allowance split.
Previously, the deputy mayor was paid 46 per cent of the mayoral salary, with the remainder of the pool divided evenly among the councillors.
Last week, the council voted to increase the deputy mayor's salary to the equivalent of 50 per cent of the mayor's salary in recognition of the active role taken by Deputy Mayor Julie Geange.
It was recommended Ms Geange receive $36,301, a 17.8 per cent increase on the previous deputy's salary of $31,005.
Ms Geange abstained from voting.
Kaipara councillors can also look forward to back pay. Since last October, Kaipara councillors have been paid only 80 per cent of their entitlement because of new requirements by the Remuneration Authority for every council to have an Elected Members Remuneration policy.
After debating several issues with the authority, Kaipara adopted its policy last month.
