The rest of the country has just found out what Northpower faults worker Reg Paki has known for years - the company is a great place to work.
Reg has worked at Northpower for 20 years and last week he saw the company named one of the best big employers in New Zealand.
The lines company was named the fifth best workplace with more than 400 staff at the Unlimited/JRA Best Place to Work in NZ award in Wellington.
The Flight Centre was named best large employer, followed by AMI Insurance, Vero Insurance and Fisher and Paykel Healthcare.
After two decades with the company, it came as little surprise to Reg that Northpower scored so highly in the best-employer stakes.
Northpower human resources manager Barbara Harrison said the result was fantastic news for the company, and even more so considering the four ahead were all major national, or international, firms.
"We were really humbled to have been a finalist and really pleased with the final result. It is an endorsement of what our employees know, that this is a really neat place to work," Ms Harrison said.
"We say that Northpower is a family and this shows we're a happy family. We started from humble Northland beginnings and we're still a humble company. We still approach things like a small company, despite being large, and that's what makes it good to work here."
At any one time Northpower had more than 200 trainees, including apprentices, and she said this added to the family feel.
Northpower is in effect owned by its customers through the Northpower Electric Power Trust.
The company is made up of two arms: Northpower Network Assets, which looks after the electricity network in Whangarei and the Kaipara, and Northpower Contracting, which provides similar services in other parts of the country.
Northpower has offices in Whangarei, Dargaville, Silverdale, East Tamaki, Rotorua, Hamilton, Tauranga and Wellington.
The winners were chosen by surveying more than 37,500 people from 232 public, private and not-for-profit organisations, ranging in size from 20 to more than 3500 employees.
All power to the workers
