Low Country Blues - Gregg Allman
5/5
Wow! Gregg Allman plays homage to the blues songbook with a powerful set of mostly familiar choices, backed by a band that's top shelf, including Mac Rebenack (Dr John) on piano and long-time Eric Clapton guitar man Doyle Bramhall. But the glue that brings it all together is producer T Bone Burnett. Any album with Burnett's credentials attached is a must-have.
The songs includes Junior Wells' signature tune, Little by Little, Skip James' Devil Got My Woman and Westside Chicago blues stylist Magic Sam's My Love Is Your Love. A variety of blues sub-genres, all of them imbued with robust, growly vocals and rock-steady Hammond organ from Allman, and tasteful licks, darts and blasts from the band, including an impeccable horn section.
An authentic and gutsy rendition of blues classics, Low Country Blues has landed my first vote in election year.
