Anybody familiar with Warren Gilbertson will know it takes a lot to have him spitting tacks.
The Taradale premier men's player/coach is quick to accept defeat in the face of a mediocre performance from his men in the Homeworx Pacific Premiership. He's even quicker to salute the opposition.
But on Saturday the
affable striker criticised the guest referee from Palmerston North after Dale lost 2-0 to Signature Port Hill United in their last match of the season.
It wasn't so much that Dale lost or would have won if some decisions had gone their way. Neither was it was a case of letting off pent-up steam in the last match of the season.
"He sent off [right-mid] Matt Loveridge straight off with a red card [in the 61st minute] when all he deserved was a yellow card at the best and that just ruined the game," Gilbertson (pictured) lamented.
"We've gone the whole season with four yellow cards in 20 games and suddenly we have a red one for one that wasn't a bad tackle in the last game."
What was more damning for the whistle-blower undergoing scrutiny for his badge-qualifying game was that winning coach Tim Claudatos also called Loveridge's sending off "unjustified".
"I don't think the ref had a very good day. He even flashed a yellow card at someone and then changed his mind," Claudatos said.
On the bright side, Gilbertson was chuffed for Dale captain and centreback Hamish Sim, who played his 100th game for the club.
He felt next season Dale needed to boost their squad after surviving on 13 players this season and relying on lower-grade players to fill in.
"We need somewhere near 16 to 18 players rather than relying on div one and two guys."
In Saturday's match, Port Hill's Magnus Hansson scored a double (37th and 66th minutes) for Port Hill's victory.
An elated Claudatos pointed out that, by virtue of finishing fifth on the table, it was the first time Port Hill had finished above the former Federation League powerhouse.
"We gained some ground and the boys are amped up."
What perplexed him was that Port Hill finished with 16 games this season and Dale with 14.
"We had four or five byes and Taradale had three in a row to start the season.
"We need to go back to the 10-team league but it's important the teams coming in are deserving to play at that level."
At St Childer's park Reserve, hosts Gisborne Thistle thumped HBE Napier Rovers 5-1 after leading 4-1 at halftime.
Rueing the absence of six players away on secondary-school soccer camps, Rovers coach Marty Akers said Thistle were two goals up within 12 minutes.
The hosts were rampant, with 14-year-old right-mid Corey Adams stamping himself as a player to watch.
Nick Somerton claimed two goals while Adams, Gavin Clark and Dave Ure claimed one each.
The premiership late bloomers will be a force next season.
Nick Lucas scored for Rovers, who finished fourth on the table.
Said Akers: "We played out of position and I played Lee jackson and Andy Hill at the back.
"It sums up our season and we deserve to be fourth. Next year we'll be a year older, stronger and wiser," he said, philosophical about losing two or three players to universities.
