They may not be as fleet-footed as they were in their heyday but the Sunhawks Masters women's basketball team have shown quick thinking on one's feet can be equally effective.
The women - Di Robertson, Jo Richards, Raewyn Thomason, Lynne Pugh, Kathie Dimock, Wendy Timu - returned from the New ZealandMasters Games in Wanganui last weekend with gold.
They have competed in every Wanganui games since 1995 and now have six masters gold medals, a silver and two bronze.
"We lost one of our section games to Orsum, from Taranaki, and a misunderstanding with the draw saw us default to Whai Mana from Wellington in a section cross-over game but that didn't stop us making the final where we beat Femme Fatale from Taranaki," Robertson said at the end of the three-day competition.
This year the women played five games in a combined division of 13 teams.
The Sunhawks had a couple of late withdrawals but that didn't faze them either.
Said Thomason: "We might not be as quick on our feet but we have the experience and use our heads well."
The Sunhawks men's team of Pete Forshaw, Mark Dobson, Ian Martin, David Thomas, Misha Majestorovich, Richard Keller, Grant Wilson, Bernard Walsh and Keith Smith were among 13 teams in their grade.
Having lost their close section game against Wellington Old School, Sunhawks men found it tough in their cross-over match heading towards the semifinals.
The men finished sixth.
