Shane Hurndell International selections for a petanque trio and major tournament play on resurfaced tennis courts gave Hawke's Bay Lawn Tennis Club members plenty to celebrate this week. Fiona Browne, Beth Rouse, and Sharon Cannon were selected in a New Zealand team of 11 men and nine women for next week's Oceaniapetanque tournament in Rotorua. The Wednesday to Sunday tournament will also involve teams from Australia, Tahiti, Noumea and Wallis and Futuna Island. Cannon and Rouse will play singles, doubles and triples while Browne will play doubles and triples. Noumea hosted the last Oceania tournament in 2002. This weekend the Hawke's Bay Lawn trio will play at the New Zealand Open in Auckland before travelling to Rotorua for two days of training with their Kiwi teammates. Last weekend they played in the Kapiti Open doubles tournament where Cannon finished second with a Kapiti partner. Cannon and Rouse will also represent a New Zealand team of three men and two women at the March Pan Pacific tournament in Vietnam. Teams from Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, Australia, Mauritius, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos and Seychelles will also compete. New Zealand will be making their first appearance at the tournament. As Thailand boast the top women players in the world Cannon and Rouse are expecting formidable opposition. Today's under-16 girls play in the Hawke's Bay Junior Tennis Open at the club was the first major tournament to use the club's five resurfaced courts.
